Analyzing Your Dust

Identifies where in your process dust is being introduced or emitted and reviews the documented explosibility of such dust; if necessary, dust testing is performed.


Reviewing Your Safeguards

Evaluates your safety systems and processes to ensure they are compliant and effective; housekeeping and cleaning efforts are reviewed to reduce the risk of secondary explosions.


Prioritizing Recommendations

DHA Frequently Asked Questions

NFPA 652 includes very specific language regarding DHAs.


Who is required to comply with NFPA 652 and complete a DHA?

“This standard shall apply to all facilities and operations that manufacture, process, blend, convey, repackage, generate, or handle combustible dusts or combustible particulate solids.” (NFPA 652 – 1.3.2)

What DHA documentation is required?

“Test results, historical data, and published data shall be documented and, when requested, provided to the authority having jurisdiction (AHJ).” (NFPA 652 – 5.2.2)

If my industrial process has never had an incident, do we still need to complete a DHA?

“The absence of previous incidents shall not be used as the basis for deeming a particulate to not be combustible or explosible.” (NFPA 652 – 5.2.3)... “The absence of previous incidents shall not be used as the basis for not performing a DHA.” (NFPA 652 – 7.1.3)

How often does a DHA need to be performed or updated?

“The DHA shall be reviewed and updated at least every 5 years.” (NFPA 652 – 7.1.4). Also, any equipment additions or process modifications are required to be reviewed through a DHA.
